AHC: Daimyos' Colonies

Historically the only Japanese oversea expansion before Meiji was in Ryukyu. Although so-called Japanese Pirates had some islands on the Chinese coastline, ethnic Chinese usually comprised the vast majority of the pirate gangs.

People like Hideyoshi, with their strong pursuit for glory, only aimed at conquering Corea (and failed), without even the slightest intension to colonize Taiwan or The Southeast Asian isles.

This was not because the Japanese lacked knowledge of the region. Many Japanese artifacts are unearthed in the region, and the Japanese had world maps since 1600s.

Was it demographic that prevented Japanese oversea expansions? Or was it because of competition from the oversea Chinese? Or rather they lacked incentives?
.
Could more Japanese expansions happen in the fashion Satsuma annexed Ryukyu? Say the victims are the Malay isle states.

It can either be the daimyos doing this or the shogunate itself

Japan post-sengoku, pre-meiji was by and large xenophobic and isolationistic.

certain local Daimyo's (those on Kyushu specially) could certainly do it, but its an open question if they had the forces to do this while at the same time covering their back against opportunistic attacks from their neighbors

Assuming that: a. The leaders would allow some sort of expansion.

b. the ship/navigation technology existed in Japan.

Then I wonder what sort of economic incentives existed to pay for colonies somewhere?

What would happen to the Daimyo system if they are successful? Would it be expanded which could lead local populations taking advantage of infighting, or would we see a system of native Daimyo's who pay lip service to emperor and who ever becomes the Shogun. Since Hideyoshi and I think his entire family is ineligible, by Hideyoshi himself being a peasant and not related the Minamoto family.
