Somewhat inspired the the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic.
Your challenge, if you choose to except it to make early creators, writers, playwrites, etc to work on crossover, collaborations and fan sequels together. Preferably the end goal would be making the modern practice of remixing and, dare I say it, fanfic writing not just acceptable but expected. (Not sure if alternate history counts as history fanfic or not)
Perhaps authors could gain the habit of mentoring an up and coming writer, or maybe earlier public demand for crossovers could push some creators into collaboration, if only for the money.
Some examples might be L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll, Wonderland/Oz crossover. H.G. Wells and Jules Verne could have created some interesting space science fiction
