AHC: Create a reverse Ostflucht in Germany

Here's a fun AHC: Create a reverse Ostflucht in Germany. In other words, get millions of Germans to move from the west to the east. The PoD for this scenario is 1872 or later and cannot include things such as expulsions, ethnic cleansing, genocide, Nazism, Communism, and/or a Morgenthau Plan-style de-industrialization of Germany.

Anyway, let's see what this forum will come up with! :D

Can my pod be the discovery of resources that don't exist In OTL? If so just have a bunch of coal discovered In posen or in East or West Prussia, Prussia moves to take economic advantage of the situation and everything else works itself out.

It's unlikely that millions of Germans would move east in such a scenario, though.
The German Empire was planning to create a "Tatar" Republic or German colony in Crimea.

You want this AHC to be too easy, though! ;)
Perhaps if we can get a collapse of France late in ww1 and still have the American's get involved, maybe they try a few amphious invasions that go horribly and the Allies realise they can't win now that France is out and peace out but all the american blood spilt on German shores leads to aggressive institutionalised anti german sentiment that leads to German immigrants and Americans of German decent moving back to Germany and are offered cheap land in the east to encourage them to go there opposed to West germany?
It's a bit of a stretch in terms of plausibility but at least seems possible.

Wasn't there still enough available land in the U.S. in the 1920s, though?

I was going more for the American's making life for germans so difficult they up and leave for the fatherland and then to encourage those germans to settle in the east instead of the west the reich sells them land in East on the cheap.
So it's less about any lack American land (of which there is still plenty) but instead about fleeing an increasingly unbearable state

German immigrants can simply remain in the U.S. instead and assimilate, no?

As they did historically? Yes, the situation I suggested requires the Americans to become uncharacteristically harsh on the Germans.
Like I said it's not the most plausible pod just a technically possible one.

OK; understood.

Indeed, the hostility would have to be so large that even genuine assimilation of Germans wouldn't be good enough for many--if not most--Americans; frankly, this appears to be very hard to successfully do.

There is a reason the Germans started to move west and in this situation your asking for this trend to be completely overcome in favour of moving east, no small task in the face of the industrial boom of the rhine valley

AHCs aren't supposed to be easy, though. :)

Does getting the scattered eastern European germans to return to Germany count? Like the transylvanian saxons and volga germans?
