AHC: Conservative Counterculture

Frankly I think that butterflying the counterculture out of existence would be a lot easier, or perhaps have a counterculture which is a lot more "controlled" and favours slow and gradual change instead of the cultural revolution we had OTL.

In any case removing Frankfurt School Marxism or at least having a smart conservative counterpart to it is necessity.

As if anyone actually read that shit (sorry but I think other stuff was far more important)

A lot of skinheads and neonazis cold be considered counterculture. If you could somehow get them to spring up more in the US, then...

That would be interesting, but probably require a POD before 1955. The second the US sees the concentration camps, neonazis are going to be a very small fringe and nothing more.

Your challenge is to make the counterculture movement of the '60s and '70s very conservative rather than very, very liberal. You cannot have a POD any earlier than Jan. 1, 1955.

Wasn't the victory of Nixon and later Reagan a counter reaction to the liberalism of the 1960's?

Was it not a grass roots rejection by many Americans against the real or perceived hippie/casual sex/civil rights/welfare culture that emerged under the LBJ presidency and then kind of discredited by the ineffectivenness of Carter?

Ironically, I just thought of this same topic. The thing of the counterculture which always struck me is sometimes it could blend into elements of Conservatism. For example, Conservatives support smaller government, while the Counterculture is also weary of the establishment. If it weren't for the war on drugs and the occasional Nixonite wiretapping and civil liberty intruision, there's some common ground oddly.

Or do you mean suit and tie Conservatives? If so, during the 1960's, I believe there was a Conservative counterculture which fought against the welfare state and the New Deal Coalition which dominated the politics of the era.

I think libertarianism and counterculture blend pretty easily.

Lord knows alot of the Cedar and Jones County Republicans don't seem to think I'm an actual conservative.
