The hardest part would be getting Southerners involved in the islands instead of New Englanders.
The second hurdle would be getting the overthrow of the monarchy to happen earlier.

After that being Southerners with a plantation, probable slave based, economy they naturally side with the Confederacy when the Civil War rolls around.
