AHC: China invading Japan

With a POD before or after the Second Sino-Japanese war, have China somehow land troops in the Japanese Home Islands. Do you think China would be able to conquer Japan, if this were to happen?

With that POD it's as realistic as the Red Army reaching the Atlantic Ocean and then attempting its own version of Operation You-Know-What-Marine-Mammal, all while the Soviet Union is suffering from White Russian, Trotskyist, and Muslim revolts at the same time.

I don't think he's implying that the invasion has to happen during that period, only that the PoD leading to an invasion much later occurs in that period.

Paratroopers are notably poor at long-term occupation. With a PoD after 1900, no it's not possible.

Could it be done as part of some larger Cold-War-gone-hot scenario? It might be a bit easier if the USSR and the USA were at each others throats-- having Chinese troops landing in Japan might be a bit easier if they were led by the Soviets, right?

Then it simply becomes a matter of finding a POD for having the Cold War go terribly wrong and make sure everybody isn't nuked to kingdom come within a day, and we're golden. And avoid the Sino-Soviet split somehow. How hard could it possibly be?

Successfully invading Japan? Possible. Implausible, but possible.

Conquering Japan and holding it? ASB.

Have a look at Operation Downfall one day, and then level the playing field so that the Japanese have as much equipment as the invaders per soldier, and it's as good as what the invaders have. Now back them up with US troops. What the Chinese are going to go through is going to make the concept of Downfall look like a playground fight by comparison.

Well... shit. Still, easier than having China invade completely by itself, right? Much in the same way that it's easier for you or I to carry a semi-truck on our backs than it is to carry the Titanic.

Flying Saucers?

I remember reading a silly book once about a Chinese invasion of Australia using flying saucers. I can't remember what it was called or what happened or why I bothered to finish reading it...um, I'm not really helping am I?

Okay, what about WW2 doesn't happen and China becomes a long running Japanese vietnam in which everybody else (except Japan) arms and trains the Chinese until eventually they kick them off the mainland alltogether, including Korea. By now it's the mid 1970's and it's payback time.

What do you think?

Okay fine, back to the saucers then.

Can we have Americans training Chinese Paratroopers for insertion in a "Divided Japan" scenario in the Cold War?

Or Nationalist Chinese soldiers in the UN-mandated invasion of Red Japan :D.

Doesn't matter what type of Japanese they kill.

China doing it for the Soviets is less likely in that regard than if it's part of an international effort.

China will need a navy and a ship-building industry. How can China wind up with both? For the ship-building industry, I am thinking of a China-US naval agreement (has a nice symmetry to the Anglo-Japanese alliance) or a China-Germany naval agreement. France is also a good possibility; I believe most of China's fleet in the Sino-Japanese war was of French origin.

China also needs to be unified, and needs to have the Korean peninsula under Chinese control for the invasion to happen.
