AHC: Charlotte

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make Charlotte, NC a major world city by 2012. Major World City on the scale of: DC, NYC, London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing.

First of all, I wouldn't put DC in the same league as those other cities. The other cities you mentioned are enormous cosmopolitan centers. DC is a backwater by comparison. If you want Charlotte to be on the scale of DC, make it chosen as the capital. Not sure why Charlotte would be chosen, but if it is it would basically replace DC.

Honestly, I think it's impossible. Or damn close. All the other cities you mentioned are in good locations for a city. Charlotte isn't even on a river. No reason a major city would develop in a location like that until the 20th century.

EDIT: does it have to be exactly where downtown Charlotte is now? I see there is a nearby river, if it's on the fall line maybe it could be an industrial city in a different South. I still don't see it becoming NYC/London/Tokyo level, but maybe an early industrial center and even greater railway hub. Replace Atlanta as the main city in the region.
