AHC Challenge: First World sub-Saharan country.

Does Tanzinia have the chance to gain this role (they have been a lot more stable than a lot of their neighbors and have a good port and some natural resources)

What are you smoking, and where can I get some?

Israel and Australia as developing countries in the same league as Pakistan and Egypt!? For that matter, Argentina, Brazil, Russia, or China in the same league as Pakistan or Egypt?
Class judged by middle class.

I agree with the earlier posters who said something like Singapore is the way to go. You need a reasonably sane and honest person in power for a long time and keeping things going along steadily. You'd essentially have to transplant Lee Kuan Yew to Africa.

Zanzibar is the best bet for this, since it's close enough to East Africa that it can serve as a trade center for the whole region. Other places like Mauritius or Cape Verde are possible, but they don't have very good locations for this. Equatorial Guinea is a possibility, but all that oil, when it comes, is going to corrupt things.

Other places, like Tanzania or Kenya, are possible if there is a much greater preparation for the colonies' independence before they are granted independence. Maybe a different Suez Crisis, with the US supporting France and Britain, could lead to a more gradual decolonization, with better results all around.

just a few thoughts he never said by when can we have until 2030? Africa has had economic growth of three percent out growing most predictions (and countries) it is not out of the question to make to first world in 90 years china only needed 30:eek: and they think its Democratic:p also what about Kenya they've hardly been mentioned they can't industrialize?

now for corrections Ethiopia doesn't have a coast. and Africa has had many civilizations including Kongo. stable doesn't mean Democratic have a forward looking despot take hold you can have a boom then switch after a few years it can be rebuilt see japan with nicer names:rolleyes:. and some one said that (south) Korea had wealthy neighbors would that be occupied japan our civil war china?:p
also define sub-Sahara countries.

Well, there are always exceptions. Look at Botswana. Had it not been for HIV, I'd think it'd be more economically advanced - basically the African version of Argentina.

Botswana isn't an exception, it's the proof instead.

Look at your own statement, if not for the HIV impact of on Botswana's people, that nation might be more developed. HIV negatively impacted the only resource which truly counts: Humans.

I'll also point out that Botswana's development is based on exporting coal and electricity to South Africa. Ask yourself what will happen when, for whatever reason, South Africa no longer needs that coal or electricity. What engine will power Botswana's economic growth then?

The Asian Tigers deliberately re-invested the wealth generated from each of their economies over long periods of time to move "up" the development ladder. They went from making labor intensive goods to making capital intensive goods to researching and designing goods while paying others to make them.

Do you see any indication of Botswana making that effort? Or is Botswana's growth more a result of people formerly living primarily as subsistence farmers beginning to spend pocket money earned by stoop labor?

Actually, just to point out but Botswana actually relies on diamonds and other mining materials, including coal, gold, etc. For electricity it actually relies on South Africa not the other way around.
