AHC - Central African analogue of Ethiopia

Not sure how feasible the following is though the challenge is to establish a Central African analogue of Ethiopia, capable of covering territory from most of Cameroon and Central African Republic in the north to most of Angola and Zambia in the south.

AFAIK the only OTL kingdoms in the area were the Kongo, Lunda and Luba and am unsure of their ability to conquer the rest of Central Africa, let alone become suitable analogue of Ethiopia.

Ideally the PODs would be before the OTL Scramble for Africa which leaves the Kongo kingdom established in around 1390 as the only suitable candidate.

If the Kongo kingdom had played the Portuguese and Dutch off of each other it could have easily survived and remained relevant. If it had transformed its position into one with substantial foreign support it could have then expanded into the regions mentioned above.

That wouldn't be an analogue for Ethiopia, that would be many times bigger than Ethiopia, and would have to be much better run.

Bring in rice earlier. The issue with much of Central Africa around Cameroon is that its been historically empty.

Of course if you want a direct expy of an Ethiopian state conquering vast swaths of its neighbors, then avoid the scramble for Africa and let Rabih az Zubar continue his conquest wars. He'd be emperor of everything from Bornu to Bangui.

That said, there were a number of kingdoms all over including Chokwe, Mbunda, Msiri, etc. Its Its just theres been limited archeology done and even less translated into English.

With or without an earlier introduction of Rice, quite like the idea of this large ATL Kongo kingdom falling into decline prior to eventually collapsing and being divided upon reaching its territorial peak. Yet with the population retaining a positive memory of being ruled by a single native power, which later plays a role in the post-colonial era in either unifying the countries in Central Africa or establishing a Central African version of the East African Community / East African Federation
