I was looking at this map and looked at the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia for no reason. Then I noticed there was a river coming out of the Caspian. (apologies- I do not know its name) I had a wacky idea: build a canal from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea. I wouuld assume it would run along the lake near Tabriz, as that is readily usable water and the mountain range is thinner there. Alternately, perhaps it could be where the two river systems almost meet near Erzincan and Karkose. POD must be after development of civilization (3000 BC); having people cutting out the mountains with lasers in 2500 BC is not cool.

Again, this may be impossible but I would be curious to see if anyone could do it. Would be interesting to see a Central Asian polity build it for access to a warm-water port or something. It just seems like an interesting take on Middle Eastern commerce that no one ever considers.
