So something I've been thinking about, IOTL we had various Nationalist Movements (as in National Unification/Independence) that sprang-up throughout Europe, some for established polities and others (like Greece) basically seeking to re-create an ancient/extinct state.

Now, these were hardly destined to come into existence, for example many of the German (Bavaria) and Italian states (Venice) had established histories and very well could have gone on to remain Independent or the movements seeking to unit what was IOTL could simply have not come into being.

So, the question I have is how could we get a situation where their's major/popular support for 'Carolingian Nationalism', that is to unite the lands of the ancient Empire of Charlemagne?

The below map shows the Carolingian Empire with modern borders overlayed for clarification of what I'm meaning, though it does'nt have to be limited to just the shown borders.
