I mean, the one we had was a disaster.

EDIT: To be clear, the Washington City Canal had a serious problem, as in it had pollution, carcasses, and a problem with people falling in it at night. This is why it was covered over.
So did New York's; it was actually part of a wider problem of general urban...nastiness. NY actually used to have entire dead horses buried in several feet of refuse in its streets.

I'm sure once street cleaning, sanitation, and other facets of civilization come around the canals won't be that bad.
