AHC: British Indochina

Ok, the Challenge is for Indochina to be in British Hands with a POD no earlier than 1815.

Go.

A war with Siam was a distinct possibility around 1826-28. have them push forward in Burma and then go for Siam with the support of the Laotian king, who'll end to be a unwilling vassal of the EIC. The Cambodian succession crisis in 1834 would lead the EIC in war with Annam, and the Annamite Emperor would seek revenge joining China in the Firt Opium War. A this point, Britain will force China to recognize her paramountcy over the whole peninsula. By 1845, the area will be a patchwork of British colonies and vassal princely states much like India.

Just make sure France gets something else, it's not plausible unless the French have somewhere else to redirect their energy. Otherwise, they won't want to let go of Vietnam.

Possibly the simplest case would be that for some reason Fashoda goes hot and Britain wins the resultant war, whether other powers involved or not. It gains the French lands in Indo-China in the resultant peace treaty.

Keep the French busy with North Africa and/or Mexico.
Have them focus on Senegal or Madagascar earlier. It's not difficult.
If Britain starts moving in around 1828, she will have a considerable edge.

Fashoda is a good POD. If there is a brief war between Britain and France over the Sudan, then the British may take the opportunity, march across Siam and into Indochina and raise the Union Jack over Hanoi (that was still the capital back then, wasn't it?).

Depends. French Indochina was not a political unit. Cambodia, Laos and Annam were protectorates with varying degrees of autonomy. IIRC, Cochinchina and Tonkin were French colonies. Ha Noi was the capital of Tonkin, but, still IIRC, the real key points of French power were Sai Gon, Da Nang and Hai Phong. Especially the first two. The capital of "Viet Nam" was Hué, the residence of the Annamite Emperor. The French rule was based in Sai Gon.
