AHC: Britannia remains strong!

This is something I'm working towards in my timeline. The above is what Superpower, Pluricontinental Britain will look like in 1990, with a POD of 1947.

Rather than create an actual Imperial Federation, the Commonwealth just stays together as economic and military bloc, like the EU.
The first image doesn't show up for some reason.

I'd have it morph into a series of trade and military alliance blocs with Britain at the heads of the groups after ww2. I suppose the earlier the pod the better, but its hard to link a political pod in 1924 in Britain to the construction of trade and alliance blocs in the 50s and 60s via a good start to ww2.

An empire is inherently illiberal and inherently undemocratic.

Not necessarily. If a country has equal rights for all it's for all it's citizens, a democratically elected government (UK style monarchy optional), it can still expand by peaceful annexation and give equal rights to the residents of this new addition. It's goal just has to be to expand and gain more power over the other countries of the world. Is that not what an Empire's goals are? Military conquest is not necessary for this. In fact that should only happen if the other country attacks unprovoked.

Yeah. Most countries don't want that and would actually fight against that. This is why military conquest would be be necessary for that goal. I mean would Canada ever want to be peacefully annexed by the US? Or would New Zealandever want to be peacefully annexed Australia? Nope. Both prefer their Independence.

There are still a surprising amount of people in the dominions who see the British Empire as a good time for them. Not huge, but surprising. Also, just avoid the devastating effect of WW2, or have Britain be able to defend its colonies far better, then that could be the form of some sort of Imperial Federation (without India/Africa probably) or maybe an EU style state centred in London.

If all the people of the land have democratic rights, that's not an Empire, but a Republic or Democracy. The USA is not an Empire, even though it conquered lands and peoples and controls a land mass almost equal in size to the Romans.
