AHC: Breakup Hapsburg Empire

As it says on the tin. The challenge is to break-up the Hapsburgs, before their OTL fall in 1918, but after the Napoleonic Wars (1815).

Bonus points for doing so in 1848 in an original way.

1848 is the obvious one.

I can think of two scenarios:

  • Hungarian Revolution in 1848 ultimately fails, but generates a never-ending flare of Hungarian national identity. When German unification kicks off in 1871, the Hungarians are so inspired by the nationalist ideals in Germany that they revolt again. This time they are far more successful, as pan-German sentiment in Austria proper starts to become more influential as well. In the end, the German Kaiser sees his 'Austrian subjects' as more important than Bismarck's rejection of this early Anchluss and orders intervention. The Hungarian rebels are supplies with arms, Austria and Bohemia occuppied and the Russians come in grab Galicia. The Kaiser puts a Hohenzollern on the Hungarian throne and we have an end to Hapsburgia by 1873.
  • Alternatively - Get the Austro-Hungarians to somehow get involved in a war against Turkey over Bosnia, which leads to an early Balkan War. Invigorated by their successes in Bosnia, the Austrians try and bite off far more than they can chew in the Balkans (like Albania), one thing leads to another and the empire implodes in 1913.
