AHC: Better nickname for the Ottawa RedBlacks/Rouge et Noir

Given the negative reaction from the Ottawa fans, and the Saskatchewan owners blocking the resurrection of the Rough Rider moniker, which other nicknames would have been better for the CFL's Ottawa RedBlacks/Rouge et Noir?

Bear in mind these suggestions come from the US--but at least they're from a Yank with a working knowledge (of sorts) of the Canadian game. So, how about:

• Lumberjacks
• Mounties
• Wolverines
• Guardsmen
• Aces

Those all, to one degree or another, support the red/black colors.

I like those.

Maybe instead of Lumberjacks they could be the loggers.
The Ottawa Loggers, rhymes better and pays homage to its Bytown origins.

Why did you mess with the name in the first place?

Ottawa Rough Riders..

Although Ottawa Mounties would cool, too :)

Because the Ottawa RR's went under, and later a new franchise was formed. So it's not a matter of 'keeping'. But they couldn't automatically use the old name, they had to get a 'new' name approved. And apparently that gave the Saskatchewan team a chance to veto the 'new' name being the same as the old one.

It WAS totally weird having a single league with TWO teams with identical names....

The new owners couldn't just restart the team the old name, even after the buying the team?

It was a little weird, but even here below the border, I understood the East team was two words, the West team was one word.

Tony Gabriel was never a "RedBlack" :)

Senators? Voyageurs?

I do kind of like Loggers/Lumberjacks & Aces.

It should be Capitols, tho.;)

Of course, there's also the Porkbellies, the Lobbyists, & the Redbacks (for the C$50).:p (Mabye Brownbacks, for the C$100?:p)

The Ottawa Senators already exist— as an NHL team.

And "Capitol" is an American spelling that has no place on a Canadian team. :p

Why would they name the team after a building, especially an American one?:confused:
You do know, don't you, "capitol" is the spelling for a governing city? And "capital" is for the letter?

As for the NHL, I don't see a conflict, unless the new RedBlacks play so badly the NHLrs want their name back.:p

Umm... No.
Capitol is the building and Capital is the city (and the letter).

or, if you prefer a real dictionary,

Full Definition of CAPITOL

1
a : a building in which a state legislative body meets
b : a group of buildings in which the functions of state government are carried out
2
capitalized : the building in which the United States Congress meets at Washington

Yeah, "Capitol" is never used in Canada, except to refer to the U.S. Building. Googling "Canadian Capitol" has Google correct me with "Canadian capital"; insisting on Capitol instead gives me results on Capitol Records (and a lone article from, unsurprisingly, an American source).
