AHC: Barak Obama runs as Republican

From the "Alternate Wikipedia Infoboxes" thread:

The Absolute Worst case Scenario for the Republicans:

No, it's saying he was a Republican before the election! Apparently, he got thrown out of the Democratic party last year because he'd disappointed so many of them? But, apparently, he made his way back.

Maybe it's from a timeline where he was elected as a Republican, but then defected to the Democrats for 2012.

Hmm. If he's always been a Republican, then if we want his background to be the same, we'd need the Chicago political machine to be Republican. (Note that the infobox still places him from Illinois.) That'd change so much that I think it'd butterfly away at least half our modern politicians.

Another idea I had is that he gets his start in local Chicago politics, as a reformer - a Republican who cleans up the machine. That would give him a lot more substantiation for his message of "change"; I'm pretty sure he could make the jump directly from mayor of Chicago to President.

Lots of bonus points if you can do it without changing the Reagan Revolution or dramatically reducing its support in the Republican Party.

What about a TL or POD where his family (grandparents) moves to a rock solid non-Southern Republican state, like Illinois' neighbor, Indiana? If Obama grows up as "Barry Obama" of Gary, Indiana...

Just read Young Mr. Obama. This is basically ASB as long as Blacks are Democrats. Obama moved to Chicago because Harold Washington served as a useful (and correct) symbol that Chicago had the most powerful black community in the nation. Obama lived half of his life feeling alienated from the black community because he "wasn't black enough" supposedly.

So Nixon in '60, which is before Obama is born... so ASB it is.

After the tragic deaths of his parents and and grandparents in auto accidents a year apart, young orphan Barack H. Obama is shuttled through Hawaii's foster care system.

In 1968, he has fortuitous meeting with an Alaskan schoolteacher on a mission trip to Hawaii for his church. He soon develops a strong bond with a male role-model, which is returned. After a lot of prayer, the teacher knows what he must do. After long conversations with his wife and children, the process begins. It is an arduous process to adopt a child in another state, but the family perseveres. In a matter of months, young Barack, called Barry by his new family, finds himself in Alaska living with his new adopted family.

In 2008, after a long campaign, the conservative Republican Governor of Alaska, Barry Heath, is elected President of the United States. Among his closest advisers is his kid sister US Senator Sarah Palin, (nee Heath) who is married to Barry's best friend Todd.

Officially she is just a first term Senator but three times a week, summer and winter, the President and his sister play one on one basketball and discuss the issues of the day. "She keeps me grounded" he says of his sister, "she isn't afraid to tell me what she thinks."
