AHC: Balkanize the US

Starting with a PoD of CSA victory in 1862, how much more plausible/likely is it that the remaining US is further balkanized, and where? Put together, how much smaller could the US proper become compared to OTL?

Note that this does not require state governments seceding, and can include things like autonomous indian nations.

Several Causes.

A number of thing could have happened that would result in bulkanization. At one point New England considered pulling out of the Constitutional Convention. If they had New England would be a seperate country. The Confederate States succed from whats left of the north in the 1860's. The Republic of Calafornia Is an attractive option in light of all this. Arizona could decid it is not Texas or Calafornia and start their own country. The Mormans could start a country of their own. Suppose The British decide that Upper and Lower Canada are too different from each other. They decide against Confederation.

On the last point, with a much weaker US no longer posing such a great economic and potentially military threat the Canadians may well decide against Confederation. Most especially Quebec and British Columbia may go their own ways.

You could also see Oregon becoming independent if California is lost. Its a relatively small but reasonably settled region far from the rest of the US and unlikely to get a trans-continental railway in the near future so is going to be very distant from the east coast.

Not sure what's going to happen with Alaska but can't see any of the US states being interested/able to buy it and doubt the Russians would want to sell to Britain so it may also become independent when it becomes too expensive.
