I don't know enough about Indonesia to answer properly.

For India, it'll be difficult to break it up after independence. A few ideas: have India become independent without partition, and then have serious intercommunal violence which leads to a quasi-civil war with a few more states than OTL: you might end up with Pakistan, the Punjab, Bengal, and the northeast states as separate countries, along with a rump India. Then keep Sikkim independent. As another step, have a longer and bloodier civil war in Sri Lanka, which creates a stronger Tamil separatist movement in Tamil Nadu. Eventually, if the government handles the situation very poorly, you could have a Tamil state break away. If you play things just wrong, you could get Maharastratha to break off too.

So we've ended up with seven states:

Pakistan
Bengal
the Punjab
Northeast India / Tribal state
Sikkim
Tamil state
Maharstratha
rump-India

Indonesia might have gone that way if about 1949 there were anti-Chinese riots with a few hundred thousands of deaths, kidnappings, etc, especially wealthy and well connected ones. (If history reports are correct insofar as these Chinese businessmen elements being the primary funding for Sukarno, who then decide to switch towards a decentralizing vote.) Don't underestimate economic power of a few. The backlash could easily have an effect about the same as communists executing high generals in 1965 in OTL, this time in 1949.

We could potentially have all the Princely States: Baluchistan, Kashmir, Hyderabad, Travancore etc. continue to exist, along with India. If this happened, Pakistan wouldn't exist because of the lack of actual land that would be controlled, basically West Punjab and Sindh.

There are threads on this already, and many possbilities exist for how to do this, particularly in regard to India. However, most of them are difficult to achieve given the partition implemented in our timeline that was meant to largely be religious in nature. But, here's a go with a similar initial partion to get us started.

August 15, 1947: India is partioned into India, Pakistan, and Dravidastan. Due to location, Hyderabad and Kashmir hold on to independence-for the moment.

1950-1965: Border skirmishes occur between India and Pakistan. Due to butterflies, Goa, Daman, and Diu are not annexed and later form the Republic of Goa.

1969: South Asian War; Indo-Pakistani border war breaks out as a Bengali nationalist movement takes power in East Pakistan. The war lasts until 1972 with both sides battered and broken, and the map is remade. West Bengal joins East Pakistan to form Bangladesh, and the easternmost extension of India forms the Republic of Assam. Otherwise, borders revert to where they were before the war.

Successors to British India, 2011 CE:
  • India
  • Pakistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Assam
  • Dravidastan
  • Hyderabad
  • Kashmir
  • Goa
