A weird idea! Imagine that for some reason Austria-Hungary survives in the post-war borders of Austria and Hungary. If A-H stays a monrachy or becomes a republic does not matter. All that should happen is that A-H survives as a state of (Austrian) Germans and Hungarians.

I like it, it's neat. Though I feel like its also probably not likely; unless maybe the Allies want a safeguard against Austria joining Germany?

It is probably more likely to last if you have the monarchy left in place at least initially as something to bind them together. Past that the union might actually be quite sucessful provided it can generate nationalism for the union as a whole and not just its seperate parts.
