AHC: Australia is a enlarged North Sentinel Island

For those who don't know what North Sentinel Island is, it is an island in the Bay of Bengal. Technically, it belongs to India. But India effectively does not have control over the island. This is because of the natives, who are called the Sentinelese. These natives are extremely violent towards outsiders. If anyone sets foot onto the island, they will be attacked with arrows. The only time outsiders have peacefully interacted with Sentinelese was in 1991.

Due to the aggressive nature of the Sentinelese, the Indians have banned any travel to the island unless it is authorized by the Indian government. The Indian government has effectively given up on trying to contact the Sentinelese.

So, here is my challenge to you: create a scenario in which the Aborigines of Australia are capable of fighting off Europeans for so long and so effectively that the Europeans effectively abandon any hope of colonizing the continent and leave the Aborigines be, effectively creating a second version of North Sentinel Island.

Nobody messes with the North Sentinelese since their island has very little interesting to exploit. Their cultural relatives elsewhere in the Andamans weren't so lucky. If India wanted to "open" the island to exploitation by outsiders, it wouldn't be particularly challenging.

Australia and its surrounding islands, on the other hand, have far more interesting to offer outside cultures from the Indonesians to the Europeans, and probably even the Maori judging by their invasion of the Chatham Islands. Given Australia's proximity to whaling grounds and such, I just don't see Europeans giving up on the idea of colonising Australia for very long. Especially not since in later years, explorers coming in to catalogue Australia's geology would no doubt find the immense mineral wealth of the continent and thus trigger a gold rush.
