AHC: Anglophone Quebec

I've been reading threads recently about the anglocisation of Louisiana. Obviously a similar thing happened in Acadia. Is it possible for the same to happen to Quebec with a POD after, say, 1750?

How large were the French populations of each area at this time?

Easy ,sadly; the colonial power of Britain may have decided to make not utilitarian compromise, and forced us away in a larger Grand Dérangement, or more realisticaly but difficult, force assimilation, inic laws, etc...

Our ancestors would have rebelled and fought back though. Winning, i doubt it... But natives like Pontiac may have joined in, and...

Long hard work, but at the end, my people is a minority or worse. :(

May change things, though... maybe settling in northern future USA, and so...

I think the reason they didn't was because the US was next door and could take advantage of such a thing.

Expanding the the 1850s Grand Dérangement would be the "most opportune":( time to move the French out of the St. Lawrence River Valley. It would get increasingly difficult to do so as the events leading up to the ARW unfold and practically impossible after it, except perhaps as retribution for the 1837 Lower Canadian Rebellion

The US didn't exist in the 1750s; but yes, from about 1770 on, any attempt by the British Government to clear French settlers from the lower St. Lawrence River Valley might very well push les Canadians and the Maritimes over to the rerbel side.

As with so many AH scenarios, the problem with instituting a "Grand Dérangement" in Quebec is logistics. Simply put there were a hell of a lot more people in Quebec than in Acadia and to move said people would've been very costly and frankly almost impossible.

That being said, provided one utilizes an early enough POD this becomes more plausible. Ideally you'd want the British to conquer Quebec fairly early on, before the population really takes off as to make Anglicization easier. Now, with a POD after 1750 that becomes a bit harder as by this point Quebec's population is already quite large.

Perhaps with a POD in the 7 years war, with Braddock somehow winning the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755 and France not reinforcing Quebec, leading to a much earlier British conquest of the region perhaps in 1756. For the next 5 years the French colonists and the (mainly American) occupying forces fight a simmering guerilla war in which the British employ draconian tactics to gain the upper hand. This, coupled with harsh winters and poor harvests might be enough to severely whittle down the French population.

Add to this a more competent, less pragmatic treatment of Quebec following the war and perhaps British anglicization efforts could stand a chance of succeeding.
