How exactly?

Anytime after 1871, with a specific focus on the Wilhelmine era. I’ve been trying to find a way but it seems that it’s simply impossible unless Britain views a powerful Germany as a great of, necessary thing.

It seems to me that the best way for this to come about is that:
1) Bismarck is successful in his alliance requests in the late 1880s (this requires a change in British domestic politics)
2) The Reinsurance Treaty with Russia is never cancelled, creating German leverage for an alliance with Britain
3) Edward VII is asassinated in 1902 as he nearly was

Anyway to make this work?
I actually wrote a draft for the first entry of a TL about this. Basically, we need to find a way to make the Entente Cordial go to shit and cause the delegates to get angry at each other, therefore leading to a rivalry between France and Britian. Then, Germany needs to swoop in and say "oh yeah fuck the French", and then boom- Anglo-German alliance.

Honestly it’s better that the Entente never happens in the first place, eg the well timed assassination of Edward VII which almost succeeded historically. Does anyone know what George V’s opinion was about Germany and France at the time?

It seems to me that the greatest impediment to any Anglo-German alliance is that the British (wrongly) viewed the Germans as useless and were unwilling to grant them the concessions Germany demanded for fighting a two front war against superior forces on the continent, virtually alone, a la the 7 Years War.

The British simply have to realize that their “duck tape” diplomacy with the French and Russians was going to inevitably fail in the long term.

Easier said than done, especially when the British (with everyone else) vastly overestimated then Russians. Any ideas how?
Make the Russians a lot more powerful. Have them gain stronger armies and industry, so that they almost or straight up become an America in the east, in the sense of being a great industrial power. Have russian emperors open to reform, and who are very ambitious, in the middle east. And have France as their close ally, to help them get that far.

Now, at this point, most people here will say that that is impossible/improbable, but the way I see it, this is not a scholarly exercise, but fiction, and if you want an Anglo German alliance, this is probably the best way to do it.

Another thing is have someone, anyone really, have Germany focus less on their navy, particularly the big scary battleships. One way is to have Germany forgo the whole Scramble for Africa and not have any colonies so they focus a lot more on coastal defenses and convoy escorts to battle and keep the Baltic open. This will make Britain feel much less threatened by Germany and keep their focus on Russia and France, who might also have Italy as a friendly almost ally due to helping it form, who combined can threaten the Empire, especially if the Russians ever broke out of the Black or the Baltic Seas. This would make Germany the only real possible ally pretty much setting up a Seven Years War: Trench Warfare Style.

I believe the main drive for the Navy is that Germany thought it would scare Britain into an alliance by showing they would compete at sea if they didn't have one. Actually it pushed Britain into France's arms by showing Germany was the main threat.

I've thought of having England and the HRE forming an alliance in the Edward IV TL I work on every now and then.

Or you could have a deterioration in Anglo-French relations from Fashoda onwards. There are shooting incidents with fatalities in West Africa for example.

Also if the Anglo-Japanese treaties still exist this three way alliance would dominate at sea!

I suppose that this is a good way to do it, perhaps the Russians win the Russo-Japanese War? A slight complication is that Russia simply being strong does not necessitate Britain being hostile to her. Historically, Britain completely overestimated Russian strength an instead of being hostile, Britain appeased Russia because of her strength. However by the time of the July Crisis, Anglo-Russian Relations hit a low point due to Russian aggression in Central Asia, neither side thinking the Anglo-Russian Entente would be renewed in 1915. Thus it was the combination of Russian strength and aggression that drove Britain away during the early 1910s, and not Just Russian strength. Had Russia not been aggressive toward Britain, it is likely that the British would continue to appease her.
