AHC and WI: No West Virginia

Not necessarily. I've read that West Virginia always wanted to break away from Virginia, and they used the War as an excuse.

That's true....Western Virginia (mountains, coal, underpopulated) never had much in common with Eastern Virginia (plains, cotton, slaves) and secessionist movements began as earlier as 1790.....that's why it would be interesting to discuss how too so different would stick togheter and fare in a same state.

No West Virginia might mean the USA has 49 states. Since 49 is not as a nice and complete number as 50, perhaps the USA would push for and make Puerto Rico or Cuba a state sooner.

I'm pretty sure it'd butterfly the division of the western territories. Plus, 49 = 7*7, so we could easily have a flag with a 7x7 square of stars.

Has nothing to do with nice or even numbers. Come August we could very well have 51 states. Does that mean we'll enact our legal claim on Taiwan to round it back out to 52?

Well, their citizens support that and I certainly do, but it's not quite plausible yet.

True, but they had the US Army backing their claim in OTL. Without a Civil War or VA remaining in the Union the US government would do nothing when VA crushed any secessionists if they rose up. When VA seceded there was no reason to crush it and every reason to encourage it so US troops were sent in to protect WV when it seceded from VA.

You know that referendum wouldn't be legally binding right?

If WV seceded from VA earlier, it would probably have a different shape. I know that a few of the counties in the Eastern Panhandle were very pro-Virginia and pro-Confederacy but the USA added them to the prospective West Virginia to fortify its position in that area.
