AHC and WI: Italian Caribbean

Thanks to Italy's position in the Mediterranean its really tough (some would say impossible) for it to get a colony in the Caribbean. At least without owning the straight of Gibraltar/ having impeccable relations with any nation (Spain or Britain) that does. Also if you plan on getting to the Caribbean before the OTL colonizers did you'll have to contend with the fact that there was no "Italy" at the time, but an array of city states.

Under the "Mediterranean Cage" logic, you could argue that Italy's colonies in Somaliland were impossible.

I was more picturing Italy obtaining an island or two by purchase or by cession after a European war. However, a Venetian, Genoese, Neapolitan, or Florentine Caribbean colony being grandfathered into an unified Italy doesn't seem like an impossible task.
