AHC and WI: "Great War" Lasts 16 Months

Like it says on the tin -- war still breaks in August of 1914 following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, other than that I'm open.

Full disclosure: I'm picturing this scenario as part of TL where TR wins in 1912; the above is consistent with several options that did well in a poll

Germany First and Second armies encircled at the the Marne.

Then Russia wins at least half of the battle of Tanenburg, so they can keep up the offensive.

then they nock Germany out of the war and then A-H.

I think only the CP can win in 1914. Look up the Austro-Hungarian Tanenburg thread and have the First Marne go differently.

Ludendorff persists with his offensive towards Warsaw and the German Ninth Army is enveloped by the Russian First, Second and Fifth Armies.

JTC, I'm preferential to the war ending in 1915 -- nor that the 1914 answers aren't unappreciated...

The POD I suggested would not produce a very rapid collapse but set in motion a chain of events which would lead to Germany entering into negotitions under duress in early 1915. This could lead to what I like to call the Koreanization of WWI where fighting is going on while the negotiations are happening.

If the Haver process isn't invented the Central Powers run out of nitrates and can't manufacture explosives, leading them having to withdraw from the war. With stockpiles they could probably last until 1915.

I think he means Haber-Bosch process, the production of ammonia, which is necessary for ammunition production. Before the process was perfected in 1913 Germany imported it from for example Chile which was impossible in the war.

From a related thread on WWI being averted entirely, I figured I'd see which of the ideas being discussed applies to a shorter war:

3) The Rifians? Considering earlier German plots in Morocco, I'd be shocked if Germany didn't try to supply any Rifian revolt.
4) The Augsleich? It was due for renegotiation in 1917...
7) Flu? No Great War means that the 'Spanish' flu can't spread among the troops... but it can still spread like an ordinary epidemic...
9) Colonies? No Great War means no mass usage of colonial levies, no large-scale debts run up by the war. How much longer could colonialism last?

The President of the United States would have no effect on World War I , until unrestricted submarine warfare make US entry politically possible.
