AHC and WI: Ögedei Imperator of the Romans

Could Ögedei conquer the Eastern Roman Empire and declare himself Imperator/Basileus/Autokrator?

If that happened what would happen afterward? Might the Mongol Empire, before its collapse, adopt some Byzantine aspects? Could there be a "Purple" Khanate based in Konstantinoupolis? Might some of the western Khanates adopt Orthodoxy rather than Islam? Et cetera.

Could be, if Ogedei lived longer. After the crusaders had taken the city in 1204, the empire was weakened, so it doesn't seem unfeasable.

Interesting idea.

It could happen, but it would likely mean that Rome rises again with a Mongol dynasty...or something like the Ottomans which took advantage of Roman foundations to build their own state. But if the Mongols are claiming to be Roman emperors, they'd need to Romanize - not form some Purple Horde.

P.S.: Its Basileus and autocrator, Imperator hasn't applied since Heraclius.
