AHC: An Emperor Maximillian of Mexico situation in the USA

I was reading about how alot of nineteenth century backlash against immigration came from a fear that large numbers of European Catholics could be used as a force to support a European puppet monarch being installed in the US, as did occur in Mexico with Maximillian.

I also read that Napoleon III wanted an American Bonaparte relative to become ruler of the Confederacy if it won.

If European nations did attempt this due to a worse Civil War, which is probably the only way they could, I doubt it would stick and there would be resistance against it as there was in Mexico, and probably he'd go down even faster whoever it was.

But I think its at least remotely plausible. Any ideas?

It wouldn't be possible in the united states. The only way America could have ever had a King is if George Washington had accepted the Crown like some of his men would have liked him to have. If it didn't happen at the birth of the nation, it wouldn't have at all.

Why not have the French support the Confederacy during the Civil War, under the agreement that Prince Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte, (the second son of Jérôme Bonaparte, king of Westphalia and cousin of Emperor Napoleon III) is created the Ceremonial head of State, with Jefferson Davies as Prime Minister and head of Government?

Kings of the Confederate States of America
1861 - 1891: King Napoleon I
1892 - 1926: King Victor I
1926 - 1997: King Louis I
1997 - Pres: King Charles I
Heir: Prince Jean-Christophe of Richmond

It'd be strange for them to accept that when they wanted such a small national government - in fact, Jefferson Davis was seen by some in the CSA as just as much a tyrant as Lincoln was in the U.S.. So, yes, it'd be put down *very* fast.

Perhaps if the U.S. went to war against France and not Britain? Could Napoleon have landed forces in Washington in hopes of putting a brother on the throne? it might require a President to die in office and so there be some question as to who succeeds him that Napoleon happens to take advantage of, but since Mexico eventually fought Maximilian off, I would suspect that he wouldn't have to stay on long int hat scenario.

the only problem is, the President most likely to die in office and leave a vacacy like that is Madison, but if the US goes to war with France in, say, 1811, the French can't really get a navy over to the U.S. for someone to try to seize power if Madison and VP George Clinton both die.
