AHC: American Taiwan

With any POD before 1900 and after 1865, make Taiwan an American colony or protectorate.

I guess we could achieve this by having a Spanish Formosa, history goes by the attractor option of Chaos Theory, then have the Spanish-American War.

In OTL Commodore Perry visited Formosa(Taiwan) in the late 1850's and suggested its annexation to the US Congress. For a later annexation its possible should the US choose to maintain the control it had gained after WWII. Or had the US forced Chang Ki Shek from power and gained independence for Taiwan and recognition of the PRC as the legitimate Chinese government. From then on its possible for statehood as even today a sizable percentage of Taiwanese favor it.

The U.S. Government supports the purchase of North Borneo, making it a Territory, as a result America has more interest and connection with East and South-East Asia.

American's set up trading places on Taiwan, eventually the Chinese get pissy and try and kick them out, leading to America supporting groups that are anti-Chinese rule and help them form the Republic of Fomrosa, a decade later it goes the way of OTL Hawai'i.

The most obvious arrangement for me is for the Americans to be brought in as a neutral broker.

Say the Japanese don't do quite as well in the Sino-Japanese War. When the European powers weigh in, they decide to maintain the declared Republic of Taiwan that appeared during the war. Of course, times being what they are, they can't concieve of leaving it "unprotected," and are equally unable to decide who "gets" it. If this situation coincides with the right president, it might just be swingable.

So Taiwan would be an American protectorate?
