AHC: American Hong Kong

Just off hand I'd say no. The British were rather attached to the place and wouldn't have any reason to turn it over to us. You'd need a major POD well back in time which would release an enormous flock of butterflies.

What about Manhattan being an "American Hong Kong" ? U.S. does less well during Revolution or War of 1812, British keep the island of Manhattan which later gets returned to the U.S. (possibly a communist nation after two centuries divergence)

If Britain gains somewhere else instead of Hong Kong, and the US gains Hong Kong as a treaty port instead, that would work.
Zhoushan Islands was their initial choice as a colony. In the initial treaty of Nanjing, the treaty Britain sent to their negotiators even wrote islandS on it(with the exact island in question being left in blank) . They only crossed off the extra S when the British were persuaded to take HK island instead.
