AHC: American German-speaking country with ethnic German majority/plurality

The challenge is to have a German-speaking country in either North or South America with either a majority, or if easier, a plurality ethnic German population. The German would be understandable by European Germans without much difficulty, and would be a first world country (non-corrupt elections, elected republic, parliament or US-style government, high standard of living - kids have computers, iPods, cars, etc). Population of at least 500K or more by 1980, preferrably over a million or several million. The rest of the hemisphere is affected as little as possible (Canada and US have the same territory as OTL at a minimum).

Paraguay? They got lots of germans after wwii. Be very difficult to make them a plurality, though. Although easier than some places as its already split spanish guarani.

Hmm, what about a scenario that involves German unification with (or conquest of) the Netherlands sometime in the 1800's, leading to German Guiana (Surinam)?

Good luck with that... Even if this did happen, it's not like they'd stop speaking dutch...

Perhaps a more exploration-minded Northern Trade League could send some colonists over. The only problem with this I see is that they'd probably end up like the Boers...
