AHC: American Civil War/War of Secession that DOESN’T involve the CSA?

According to Wikipedia, the 2 most popular alternative history subgenres can be summed up as “Axis Victory” and “CSA & the U.S. Civil War”. The latter can be easily seen on this website – I bet if we were to categorize the threads on the Before 1900 subform by topic, the overwhelming majority would be about the CSA and the U.S. civil war.

So here is your challenge: come up with a scenario where U.S. undergoes a civil war or a war of secession but one that does not revolve around “the south” seceding. I’d prefer if you base this on real OTL movements that could have potentially lead to a civil war scenario, but you can come up with your own ATL movements.

Hartford Convention. New England secedes.

Would it result in a war similar in scope to OTL American Civil War?

Are there any other candidates for fulfilling this challenge?

What about a world in Slavs continued, the reforms of labor never came and in the 1890s, Scialists and Slaves revolt to over throw the Bourbon Democrats, a league of Southern Gentleman and Robber Barons.

Most likely.

Otherwise you have to reach deep into the pocket of unfounded speculation. I just did and conjured up several - all of which posit a dissolution of the USA in the 20th century around the disparity between the densely populated, more urbanized, politically progressive, socially liberal, and green-minded coasts and the more rural, socially/politically conservative, pro-development plains, Texas, and montaine west. You could have the coasts secede from what they perceive to be a too conservative/reactionary USA or the "heartland" secede from the coasts. The flash point might be restrictions on state energy development and federal western land.

Think "Sagebrush Rebellion"
