AHC: Alternate European Capitals

With a POD no earlier than 1000 AD, create a Europe, with recognisable nations, with as many non-OTL capitals as possible.

Thessaloniki as the capital of Greece in a world where the Kingdom of Greece decides not to try an pour money into reviving a village of 4,000 into a major national capital and instead settles in the largest city in the country. If the Greek population transfer with Turkey still occurs, then Thessaloniki likely ends up with a large population of Pontic Greeks.

Frankfurt as the capital of Germany in a world where the revolution of 1848 ended in the establishment of a hereditary Empire of Germany three decades early.

Following the successful passage of the United Kingdom Federation Bill of 1890 the City of York is established as the new federal capital of the United Kingdom with London remaining the capital of England, Edinburgh capital of Scotland, Cardiff capital of Wales and Dublin capital of Ireland. York is chosen for its central location to the four nations. Later the Isle of Man and Channel Islands join the Federation and send MFP's to York.

The best way to meet the requirement is focus on more countries. HRE being a hundred independent recognisable countries is the way to get the highest score

Always wanted to do a timeline with a full blown socialist revolution in Britain. Manchester, birthplace of the revolution, would be the capital.

That would also make sense because it’s inward rather than outward facing like London, although I remain skeptical of any real Socialist success timelines in either the US or Britain

I cannot repeat this often enough, but the only remote chance to have Frankfurt as the German capital following the 1848 revolution is to have the radical republicans win an utter and complete victory over all other factions. That in itself is pretty much impossible, so the capital of a German Empire would always end up in either Berlin or, in a much less likely scenario, Vienna.

With a PoD going back far enough, Germany's capital could be literally anywhere. Aachen, Dresden, Vienna, etc. Berlin scarcely even existed before the Late Middle Ages.

Also, Kraków was Poland's capital for a long time. Who's to say it couldn't have stayed there?

And of course, Constantinople could wind up as the capital of quite a few different empires.

Novgorod as a capital of Russia would be interesting. Dunno how tho
Russia could also have many contenders for a different capital. Tver' is a likely city for example.

With a PoD no earlier than 1000 AD literally every city in Germany is more likely to become the capital than Berlin. And in Berlin itself Cölln could have become the main city and we would only know Neuberlin as a quarter of Köln an der Spree. Also Spandau or Köpenick could have become name giving city in the greater Berlin area. Berlin was made into the capital of Brandenburg by the Hohenzollern. They could have established it everywhere in Brandenburg. Charles IV built a great castle in Tangermünde as capital which is today in Saxony-Anhalt. But in any Luxembourg scenario the capital of Germany would end up in Prague.

They'd have to do better in their War of Independence, then, since OTL the Greeks didn't get control of Thessalonica till after the Balkan Wars.
