Is it possible for ALCO [American Locomotive Company] to have a dominant share of the locomotive market in the United States to this day?
Any thoughts on how this might be achieved? A few points: ALCO was an early leader in the diesel market (40% of the market in 1948). However the partnership with General Electric, who supplied the electrical gear broke up in 1956 and GE soon entered the market on their own locomotives and seriously damaged ALCO's place in the market. Many ALCO export designs were quite popular overseas however. Or are GM-EMD and GE unstoppable?
