AHC: African War After 1960

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to give a plausible PoD a great war that involves most of the nations of Africa, post-decolonization.

I think an Able Archer war might involve a lot of them getting nuked for basically no reason, if that counts.

Neither the USA nor the USSR would waste nukes on most of Africa. Bases along the Med might be hit, which qualifies as Africa. If South Africa hasn't go through the change from the apartheid regime then it might be hit as a functional NATO ally. Otherwise the rest of Africa simply is no threat to either the US/NATO or the USSR/WP and therefor any effort especially nukes going there is a waste.

With Second Congo War you might can get even expanded African Great War. There was involved many other African countries.

Barthélemy Boganda succeeds in uniting most of the United States of Latin Africa, consisting of Chad, CAR, Camaroon, Gabon, Equatorial Africa, Congo-Brazzaville

Julius Kambarage Nyerere succeeds in creating the East African Federation, consisting of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda

Both Pan-African states become regional powers with credible militaries.

As the Belgian Congo is decolonized the old colonial elite support the breakaway state of Katanga, which is practically ran by European corporate interests and European mercenaries.

In the mid 1960s the USLA decides the Europeans must be kicked out and Congo-Kinshasa reunited.

Propping up Katanga is Apartheid South Africa, the Federation of Rhodesia-Nyasaland and the Portuguese.

Mix in some meddling from the Cold War superpowers and that's a recipe for Iran-Iraq war tier carnage.

Africa is too big and politically different to get the majority of countries involved in some continent-wide war. The Congo Wars in OTL come quite close to the limit I think. The Congo Wars could have seen the involvement of some other countries, for example it's not a stretch to have South Africa send troops to that conflict.

EDIT: It's probably not a stretch to get Tanzania and Zambia involved too.

Maybe a certain Libyan colonel decides to get involved in the Second Congo War and it spirals from that?

Gadaffi´s dream of an Pan-African(and-or Arab) Empire could lead to some interesting pods (with malta included). Maybe he takes Idi Amin and other rulers as allies and create some Sort of Empire, which is involved in armed conflicts ? The problem is Gadaffi´s religious ambitions, for he also wanted to create a religious Empire, but Africa has many confessions( His mind and ideology seems to be fluent and rather constant)

Maybe he focuses less on the Islamic side and more on the "Third World nationalist" and "socialist" side of his ideology?
