AHC: Adolf Hitler, Defender of Democracy & Germany's Savior

The challenge for today my friends is this. Make Adolf Hitler a believer in the Democratic system, make him Anti-Fascist, and a supporter of a German Republic. At the same time, make him still become a major force in German Politics, and finally the one to lead Germany out of the Great Depression.

  • Believer in the Democratic System: Yep
  • Supporter of the German Republic: Well, its a monarchy.
  • Major Force in German politics: Yep!
  • Lead Germany out of the Depression: No, that's Gustav Stresemann.
Read "Reverse Cold War" for an alternate Hitler.

I wrote a brief timeline where after the trauma of the trenches, Hitler reverts to his childhood Catholic faith and enters the priesthood.

Years later, he leaves the priesthood to lead the Catholic Center Party to victory over the Strasserite Nazis and later to defend Europe against Stalin.

Link please. But fails the challenge. :)

This sounds interesting.

Hey, my Hitler does not fail the challenge, he's the fucking WINSTON CHURCHILL of my TL. (Reverse Cold War)

I say that counts as defender of Democracy, and Germany's Savior, no?

So, sort of an alternate-timeline counterpart of Konrad Adenauer?

My TL's 100% there - Hitler's REPUBLIC. Linky below, in my sig. It wasn't easy, and took a way early POD, 1901.

First of all i'd get him into art school. The asshole wasn't half a bad painter, he deserved to study there. This keeps him away from the baddest parts of Vienna thanks to the scholarship: it has been postulated his racism originated with his stay in vienna's slums. Then he needs a mentor in the Accademy, someone that recognizes his talents with communication and helps him develop sane, rational political ideas maybe introducing him to a few influential friends. He'll still probably need some medications or psycotherapy, he was the impressionable, nervous and emotive sort, he needs someone to help him channel it constructively. Then he can start his political career: university life should give him plenty of occasions to get involved with politics. He could start painting manifestoes.

Are there other art schools besides the big one in Vienna? I don't know about him deserving to get into a place as prestigious as that, but there might have been alternatives.

AFAIK, not on that education level. Look what i found:
http://www.bytwerk.com/gpa/hitlerpaintings.htm
He had a good, if conventional and traditionalist, technique. Decent use of perspective too, and God knows it's one of the hardest things to master.
He probably was just as good as most of the students that got that scholarship, but i don't have the first idea of how to verify that.

I don't think its too hard. Hitler gets into Art school in Vienna. He ends up meeting more jews and isn't by any means a hardcore antisemite (though he retains some just because of his upbringing and the period he lives in, though it dissipates as he gets older).

He works as a highly trained, but unsucessful artist, he tries to avoid conscription in the Austrian Army and heads to Switerland where he paints, drinks, and lives a mostly happy existence. He eventually returns to Munich Germany where he joins the Liberal German Democratic Party. He states that the Monarchy was the problem Germany entered the War, and feels that true Germans would have settled for Peace, and kept more of its land.

While he does become a skilled orator and political speaker, Hitler doesn't get far in politics due to his background at first, but by the mid to late 20's he is leader in politics in Munich and the DDP. He runs for the Reichstag in 1928, leaves in 1932 and runs for President in 36, promising to take Germany out of the depression while also fighting Communism, and National Socialism. Hitler of course is still seen as somewhat hard to get along with, but he does get the Centre Party, and other Centrist and Right wing parties to join with him, changing his earlier harsh rhetoric towards Germany's upper class, seeing them as necessary for fighting the KPD and NSDAP. Hitler also tries to emulate American programs in Germany, working on public work projects and getting Germany back to work.

Eventually he makes an Alliance with Poland, Czechoslovakia and Austria, to defend against the Soviets in the East. By 1940 and 41 the Soviets begin to mobilise invading Poland and the Baltics. At first, Germany is alone, though Hitler does get Britain France, and Itlaly to join the fight. Spain, which has become a socialist country, stays neutral.

The war seems to be in a stalemate. While the Soviets have been stopped at the Oder Neisse Line, the Germans British and French are unable to push them back. The soviets have also taken Greece and Turkey and are threatening the Middle East. Meanwhile, the U.S. while lending support to the Allies, is focused on its own issues. Japan also is a threat, though it has been taking land in China.

In a controversial decision, Germany allies with Japan, in order to defeat Russia, making it promise they won't attack U.S. or British Territories, not commit atrocities in China. The U.S eventually joins in 1942 when the Russians bomb some of the Aleutian Islands. The U.S then fights the Russians in the West while defending Alaska in the East. Eventually with U.S. help, the Russians are defeated. Stalin kills himself awaiting trial in 1948, while many of his enemies switch allegiances to stay in power in Russia.

As for Hitler himself, he serves as president from 1936-48 before retiring. The former president then returns to Munich where he continues to speak, paint and write. As for his personal life. The former president was a bachelor until he married a Munich Woman, Paula Hoffbauer, in 1930 while in the Reichstag. However there were rumors that he had affairs with a few actresses and film stars in the 30's and due to having no children, it was assumed he was sterile due to an STD caught at some point. Hitler died in 1961 at the age of 71 in January, and was buried in Munich, his adopted hometown

The problem with that is that a japan that doesn't attack european pacific colonies and american pacific territories, is a japan that starves for oil. You'd need at least some concessions to convince them, and even then the nationalists would be unsatisfied... A japanese-american War in the pacific becomes unavoidable in the 50s, or at least a Cold War if japan gets nukes.
Also i don't see Stalin just waking up in the 40's and invading poland.

Might he do it earlier? Or does he do it at all? Another thing I thought of, would Hitler , even if he loves democracy, still use illegal means to supress undemocratic movements? Not like concentration camps and the like for ATL strasserite nazis, but maybe do things kind of like Lincoln did in the USA in the ACW

Have him assassinated in mid 1939 before Poland but after the rest of Czechloslovakia is annexed, he will be well remembered and I doubt his successors will push the Polish question so hard. Danzig eventually revolves to Germany via plebiscite and the German economy has a near-collapse, causing major internal tensions and possibly civil war. A new military dictatorship arises and Germany becomes a technological leader under a Wehrmacht-based dicatorship by 1945. They keep Austria and Czechloslovakia along with much of Poland into the present day.

That does not at all answer the challenge.
