AHC: A world without Bieber?

Something to consider is that Justin Bieber and his mother have been turned into heroes of the conservative pro-life movement in Canada and the United States:

Something that I will say is that, while I detest his music, his influence in placing a very conservative issue and platform into a mainstream context can't be ignored.

So, if anything, you're saying that Romney not only does not win for 2012, but, Newt Gingrich gets the nomination from an otherwise bored primary electorate and almost almost wins in 2012 but not quite?

What do you think is more plausible in a world with Bieber as a Christian country music star (and why)? President Romney or President Gingrich?

I personally think a Christian-country star Bieber would endorse Romney over Gingrich because he is from the north and more moderate in views.

Worst case scenario: He replaces CCM Crossover Needtobreathe on Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" Tour? (Doubly bad for me. I'd have to hear him- and I'd not get into Needtobreathe (ironic, since they're from my area...).)

Of course, Bieber is not only opposed to abortion. He's also in FAVOR of a Canada-style Health Care System.

Keep in mind that Bieber's mother (named Pattie Mallette) would have had a very different life without a baby. She was a high school student when she got pregnant. Imagine that she goes to a four-year college and moves down south. She is clearly talented at PR/ marketing/ building popularity. She could probably have a good career in campaigning.

You could imagine her getting involved in Republican politics, and Romney choosing her as his top campaign manager because she had established herself in previous elections as a miracle worker among young voters and across the Twitterverse.

A somewhat spicier version is that Mallette (or whatever her last name is at this point) is on John Edwards's campaign in 2004 or 2008 and starts having an affair with him. She is a brilliant campaigner, so he wins. But then Edwards' presidency is rocked by scandal when the affair is discovered. This is enough to give Romney an edge in the next election. Of course, Edwards could have just had an affair with whoever he had an affair with OTL, and it would be the same but not quite as interesting.

If she's just as pro-life in this timeline as she is OTL, she would be more apt to support the Republicans, or stay away from both parties. Here, her beliefs may or may not be different. Her own decision to keep her baby was formative in solidifying her beliefs about abortion.

I think the main effect will be 4chan having to come up with a new way to trick 14 year-old girls into cutting themselves. I'm sure they'll find another way though, crafty devils that they are.

Eh... without Scooter Braun, I don't see Bieber doing much outside of YouTube - he wasn't picked because of his musical ability, but because Braun felt he had a marketable look. They market some other schmo, Bieber's just singing bad karoke on YouTube.

We'd be spared the semi-resurgence of boy bands though - no Beiber, no One Direction and the rest of them.

Those are some pretty good ideas you got there :) If you elaborate on some aspects of it, it can show a plausible way a world without Justin Bieber can result in a Romney presidency. I never thought of Bieber's mom being part of the answer so props on coming up with that.

If you clear up a couple of questions, the timeline could very well work. First of all, what leads causes Mallette to move to the United States? Maybe she falls in love with an American man or if she stays with Jeremy (Bieber's dad OTL) he can get a transfer to the US or just move there in search of work.

For your first scenario, what causes Mallette to support Romney for 2012 let alone campaign for him. Is it his pro-life views (which if it were, Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum would be a more appropriate match for her). Perhaps, it could be something Romney did as governor?

For the second one, what causes Mallette to support Edwards for he is certainly not pro-life. Maybe not having Justin convinces her to become pro-choice. Being from Canada, she might agree with him economically so that could be what ties them together.

Clear up these loose ends and we'll be good to go :D

Well, I think most likely Mallette won't stay with that Bieber fellow she was dating, since she didn't OTL. In my first post, I mistyped that she got married, but I meant to just say "pregnant", so I edited that.

For everything else, there can be a million plausible possibilities that make it work. Maybe she goes to college in the US (North Carolina? Boston?). Maybe she goes to college in Canada but involvement in her college political groups convinces her that the only way to really
Or maybe she gets a corporate job in the US just to get away from home or just because there are more opportunities and better paying jobs.

If she happens to live in Massachusetts, she might start supporting Romney earlier in his career and continue to work with him in his presidency. Being Canadian, she might believe in Romneycare, and in her formative years she can develop any number of reasons for thinking that state-level medical insurance is better than federal-level. Or maybe she's willing to help any Republican (teaching them how to excite a crowd and smile and style their bangs), and in 2012, Romney was the one who asked her first or paid the most or seemed most electable.

If she works for Edwards, she probably hasn't developed her pro-life convictions. Edwards portrays himself as a friend of the little guy, which might be especially appealing to her. And, like the Romney case, the same chance events of history could work out -- she just happened to be in North Carolina at the right time, or Edwards just happened to be the Democrat who offered the best job. If you want to go the affair route, you could go into his dreamy eyes and his boyish good looks for a guy 20 years older than her. But let's just say she doesn't fall for a married man with a dying wife until she at least gets to know him better.
