AHC: A Welsh Empire

With a POD after 900 AD, can you make a Welsh nation, derived either from a whole Wales or a Welsh state such as Gwynedd or Deheubarth, which covers an area comparable in size to a mid-level Empire of the Colonial Period, either in overseas possessions or in a contiguous landmass, or a combination. A Welsh state might conquer the states of modern-day England, for instance.

One requirement: the Empire (or other kind of state e.g. Confederation) has to be stable, and has to retain a fairly high level of Welsh culture, ideally including language.

not sure, i think in that time, the good days of the celts were pretty much over. maybe there could be a plague among the anglo saxons, which ites them quite hard, making them weak and vulnerable. While the welsh people try to get all their strenght together. the welsh people have a good leader and declare war, defeating the anglo saxons, and conquering England, this would allow them to assimilate the remaining anglo saxons, if they arent big in number.
I dont know much how inhabitants welsh and England had back then, however it was reather mountainous and rather small so they werent that numerous. but if you have fewer anglo saxons, it would definatly be easier for the welsh to take control over Britain and assimilate them, if you want. I think it would be possible.

In the 13th Century, a Welsh state created by a successful and longer living Dafydd ap Llywelyn following up and building on the achievements of his father, Llywelyn Fawr (the Great)-- is probably the best bet. Needs to be followed up by defeating Edward I of England. Astute alliance-building in Britain (perhaps Ireland) and on the Continent needed to increase plausible survival against its big neighbor.

Turquoise Blue would love this, I suspect. :D

Lywelyn Fawr's grandson Llywelyn ap Gruffydd had a decent chance to create a Welsh state as well. For him to achieve such a thing simply requires his brothers to have poorer luck earlier on or for Llywelyn to be less merciful to the ingrates he called siblings, in particular Dafydd who was not imprisoned for life like Owain though in hindsight he should've been executed. If say Llywelyn showed less mercy in the aftermath of Bryn Derwin and had them both executed or given lifelong imprisonments (or perhaps if both had fallen in the battle) then one of the greatest obstacles to his unification is gone. Follow that up by having Llywelyn not reward Rhys Fychan with land from his own allies then Dehuebarth would remain loyal to him. I like the idea of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd doing better because in spite of him being too generous and forgiving he was a solid leader who actually managed to be recognized as Prince of Wales by the King of England. I actually had a TL idea that included all the above and continues with Llywelyn being able to lend more support to his ally Simon de Montfort during the Second Baronial War. It's not enough to win Simon the war, but the extra help results in the Battle of Evesham being a total bloodbath on both sides rather than a largely one-sided massacre, with many if not most of the present lords in the battle dying. This includes the King and Prince Edward in addition to many other notables. Of course this ends with England still being in civil war, but even more chaotic now, a Second Anarchy if you will. A situation Llywelyn's united Wales would be able to take advantage of...
