After the self proclaimed Territory of Arizona secceded and joined the Confederacy, the Confederate Government Devised a plan for the west. They would first keep control of the Region, then take over the Union New Mexico Territory. After they did that they would sieze Colorado territory, which was at the height of its gold rush. Then they would take Fort Larmie, which would cut the West from the east, Then the Confederates would take over California and use it to make the Union blockade more difficult and to get supplies from abroad.
The Confederates did suceed breifly for keeping control of thier Arizona Territory, However with the battle of Glorieta pass they failed to take Santa Fe, the Capital of New Mexico.
Keep in mind this was not a large campaign, the largest battle had only 5000 participants, one "Battle" only had 23.
What would be a way to have a more sucessfull or completely sucessful New Mexico campagin? Then what would the effects on the rest of the war be?
