AHC: A sucessful New Mexico Campaign

After the self proclaimed Territory of Arizona secceded and joined the Confederacy, the Confederate Government Devised a plan for the west. They would first keep control of the Region, then take over the Union New Mexico Territory. After they did that they would sieze Colorado territory, which was at the height of its gold rush. Then they would take Fort Larmie, which would cut the West from the east, Then the Confederates would take over California and use it to make the Union blockade more difficult and to get supplies from abroad.

The Confederates did suceed breifly for keeping control of thier Arizona Territory, However with the battle of Glorieta pass they failed to take Santa Fe, the Capital of New Mexico.

Keep in mind this was not a large campaign, the largest battle had only 5000 participants, one "Battle" only had 23.

What would be a way to have a more sucessfull or completely sucessful New Mexico campagin? Then what would the effects on the rest of the war be?

Umm....the Battle of Glorieta Pass happened north and east of Santa Fe, so Santa Fe had already been captured by the Confederacy.

Now having the Confederacy hold Santa Fe, that is another story.

The big problem is that the Confederacy lacked the manpower to hold anything out west and the Union didn't. If the Union needs to rail over 15,000 troops it simply does so. The Confederacy didn't have the 15,000 troops to spare.

Agreed. The C.S.A. had a hard time holding its own without wanting to conquer anything. It would really need to work to win a future war against the U.S. Your best bet on winning the area is have the U.S. absolutely decimated by Britain, France, and the C.S.A. and then impose the most humiliating terms possible. Frankly, the C.S.A. didn't deserve to get this area by any stretch of the imagination. You would essentially have to make the U.S. cede West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Indian Territory, the Confederate Arizona Territory, which would be wanted more and on top of all that give them the rest of Arizona/New Mexico. Pretty unlikely.
