Even if Reagan felt a need (which he wouldn't) to replace Bush with a woman, there are many Republican women he would choose before her--e.g., Elizabeth Dole. Whatever problems Reagan may have had in 1984, getting the vote of the far right against Mondale was not one of them.
 
Maybe at some point have the ERA pass, and some judge somewhere rules that it mandates unisex washrooms or drafting women. It doesn't have to get all the way to the SCOTUS, but if there's enough backlash, and it's close enough to an election, there might be a movement to pass another amendment nixing the earlier amendment, and Schlafly could be viewed by the GOP as a good standard-bearer for that casue, at least in the veep slot.
