Inspired by some recent Dune related musings:

As many of you may know, Frank Herbert wrote Dune in 1965. Dune was (and is)considered to be the finest work of science fiction, exploring a range of themes, including but not limited to ecology, religion and heroism. Frank Hebert went on to write five sequels to Dune before his death 1986, and his son Brian has written at least a dozen by my last count.

In contrast to the nearly universal praise that the original novels received, film adaptions of Dune have been considerably less sucessful. There has been one full length feature film released in 1984 and directed by David Lynch. Though the film had its fans, by and large it was rejected by fans and critics alike, and it was a financial flop. The film's financial failure put an end to plans for any sequels.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it is to come up with a scenario in which the Dune film is an unqualified success, and and is followed up by at least two financially successful sequels. Director, year of film, and faithfulness to the text are up to you. Though bonus points if the director remains Lynch, and he stays on for all three films.
