AHC: A democratic British Republic

Your task is here to make the territory of the OTL 2015 UK into a republic. However, this has an extra requirement:

The republlic can neither be Communist in any form or way, nor in any other form or way dictatorial. So... make it into a democratic republic.

I think the easiest way is for Britain to lose WWI and then have a communist revolution murder the monarchy and then by the 1980s there would be a democratic revolution

Alternatively you need a monarchy crisis maybe Edward VIII refuses to give up throne or if the Diana thing goes tits up but that really is pushing it

Try the TL in my sig.

After Cromwell? Inconceivable! :D If they don't like the monarch, the UK Government (Parliament?) can get another one, either moving straight to the heir (there's always nonsense about Charles being skipped for William, no one aside from Diana fanatics takes this scenario seriously) or just get another monarch from Europe.

Blame Cromwell ;) I sometimes think even a communist or fascist UK would still retain some kind of constitutional monarch (wasn't there a Queen Zara in V for Vendetta?), thanks to old Ironsides :p

This is in post 1900, so that limits things. The issue then is that by this point the monarchy really doesn't have much power left. Oh he can dissolve parliament, or refuse to ratify a law, but that's it, so the actual chances of a monarch getting kicked out are fairly slim, and even if it does happen, the chances of another one not getting put in are close to zero.

Which was rather what I was thinking - if you want a British Republic then you need to have the whole Cromwell thing work out differently. It isn't like Charles II was any kind of prize as a leader (not even a prize twit like his father!).
At a guess you need to look at maybe having the Levellers do rather better than OTL - they were a moderately popular bunch within the New Model Army but lost a power struggle with Cromwell and the leadership. If they can somehow win it (NOT easy!) they you'll end up with the UK as a democratic republic. The course of history since then would, of course, have been radically different.

Post William and Anne there was no purpose for a republic. The monarchy had no real power and Parliament functioned as a Republic anyway. Unlike the USA which gave monarchial powers to a serial monarchy which are retained and used to the present day. The last opportunity was the Commonwealth republic.

The Levellers were never popular, most at that time see them as an extreme fringe group. A successful and stable Cromwell protectorate that develops into a democracy (with written constitution and a functioning second chamber! Har har...) is the best chance for a British democratic Republic. How that can be achieved is the problem, maybe a stronger heir for old Ironsides (certainly not either of his sons). Not to mention problems with Puritans who are even more extreme than Cromwell like his Major Generals.

That would be a POD of pre-1900, not post-1900.

Post 1900? The only scenario I can come up with is operation Seelöwe succeeding and the UK main island spending 3-4 years under German rule until they get kicked out by a combination of liberating Canadians and yanks and an uprising of local resistance (see France). After the war it is found that the royal family has either A)either been killed or suffered some other unknown fate B) is discredited in the eyes of their countrymen for collaborating with the Nazis or C) is still sitting high and dry jn Canada, New Zealand or the Bermudas yelling increasingly out-of-touch instructions from afar while the local UK patriots are doing the dirty work and seeing no real support or D) are suffering the lasting effects of a four -year German slandering campaign, the only thing the Germans realm accomplished in the isle. Also have all available replacements fall into one of this four categories (they need not all be the same. Just one per pretender would be enough). Long story short: Much ljke Greece and almost Belgium, the UK re-emerges as a kingless republic.
