Has no one read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay? One of the major subplots is a "battle" in Antarctica.
SPOILERS:
Kavalier is stuck on a monitoring station in WWII and finds out there's a lone Nazi scientist stranded on the continent thousands of miles away. Kavalier gets this single-minded idea to kill a Nazi and thus, "win" the continent for the allies.
It's a pretty jarring section of the book that just splits it in half. Seriously, it's AH and it won the Pulitzer, go read it!
