AHC: 20th Century military confrontation in Antarctica

Has no one read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay? One of the major subplots is a "battle" in Antarctica.

SPOILERS:
Kavalier is stuck on a monitoring station in WWII and finds out there's a lone Nazi scientist stranded on the continent thousands of miles away. Kavalier gets this single-minded idea to kill a Nazi and thus, "win" the continent for the allies.

It's a pretty jarring section of the book that just splits it in half. Seriously, it's AH and it won the Pulitzer, go read it!

Vichy regime agrees in late 1940 to collaborate with the Nazis in setting up a secret submarine and surface raider supply base in the Kerguelen Islands. Vichy does this to get even with the British for the sinking of French warships at Mers-el-Kebir and for the attack on Dakar. The Nazis use the Kerguelen base to sink British ships in the Indian Ocean with considerably greater success than in OTL. In 1942, the Allies send a small force, mostly South African, to close it down.

The German raider Pinguin went down to Antarctic waters in early '41: they seized two Norweigan Whale factory ships and 14 whale-catchers. One of the whale-catchers was retained as a scout, two tried to make it back to occupied France but were intercepted by the British (and scuttled), but both whale factory ships and the other 11 whale catchers arrived in Bordeaux in April '41. The whale catchers were used as sub chasers and patrol craft. The one used as a scout wasn't around when Pinguin was sunk by HMS Cornwall on 8 May 41, it met up with the raider Komet, which used the whaler as a small minelayer, before her engines quit and it had to be sunk. One book about the raiders called this little ship "the one German warship that never saw Germany."

Argentina joins the Axis and takes the Falklands 40 years early. The allies decide to land troops in Antarctica, and invade Patagonia via the Antarctic Peninsula. The invasion is a disaster for the allies, most of whom die of cold before reaching the Antarctic Pen. By this point the Argentines have learned of the Plans to invade South America, and launch a pre-emptive strike on the Allies. All in all, a total disaster that teaches everyone that Antarctica is not a good place to wage war.
