In 1988, Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis was initially leading Republican Vice President George HW Bush. However, after deciding to run a bland and vapid campaign that ignored Bush's attacks, as well as a series of blunders involving an infamous photo op and a diastrous debate performance, Dukakis' massive lead turned into a massive deficit and he lost in a landslide.
