In 1962, Burma, a country which since independence in 1948 had a growing economy and a robust system of democratic governance, although with several marxist insurgencies, had a coup. The new government, led by Ne Win, established a totalitarian socialist state that lasted for almost 30 years before some amount of opening in the 90s. In that time, Burma's progress ground to a halt and the country has still yet to pull itself out of that dark period, as evidenced by the current ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya people.
So could the coup be averted? Maybe India could invade and restore U Nu. And if it was averted, what impact does it have on Southeast Asia?
