Really, you think about starting a new one without even asking the guy that put in hundreds of hours running the old one?

Believe me, this is a hell of an effort. If you want to do it properly like Euro2012 was (and that was a lot of fun) you are going to have to donate a lot of time to this, like I did for that. The thing is I would be happy to run another contest, since I still have everything from the older competitions, but for 2014. The only reason the other ones worked was because they went along with the OTL competitions, you are going to really struggle to keep this going for a month without that. Also they were rare, that was the point. It kept them special, so you're really doing the idea of the event I was so involved in a disservice by running another now.

So basically, I'm kind of annoyed. I'm not going to claim that I had any copyright on the tournament but I think you've really gone into this badly. We tried running an Asian Cup in 2011 and that failed horribly after the first few matches, this will do the same unless you are willing to put in the effort.

If you really want to do this properly, stop for a sec and let me help.

For a start I would strongly suggest not doing a World Cup this summer. A joint American cup would work well since we had the World in 2010, Asian in 2011 and Europe in 2012; Americas in 2013 and back to World in 2014 would work.

I'll help if you want me too but from experience I'll say you need to stop and plan for a bit.

EDIT: Especially, no offence, if you only joined this month. You weren't around for the previous ones, you came across this idea and wanted to set one up yourself. You have no idea what you're getting into, and that does sort of annoy me even more.

Your right I really should have asked you before I did this.
I think that your thread will end up being better than mine
But all I'm trying to do is to have a little fun.

I think you should probably lay down some basic ground rules for making teams. It seems like a ton of teams have been made already, many by the same people. Maybe limit it to 1-2 teams per person until everyone who wants to has gotten a chance. Also, be specific about what territory your country controls, and make sure it doesn't conflict with previously created countries.

I don't see why we shouldn't go through with this now, but I suppose Martin's advice is useful since he has done this before. My only experience with something similar was a World Baseball tournament someone started last summer than never got past the planning stages. After spending time developing my country/team, it was a bit annoying. So, if we are going to do this, let's make sure everyone is willing to see it through. That said, I think it could be a lot of fun.

Anyways:

The Malagasy Kingdom

OTL Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Portions of OTL France (Mayotte, Reunion) and Tanzania (Zanzibar, Pemba).

Colors: Red and White
Nickname: Islanders (mainly used outside the country)

Manager: Ramboasalama Mustafa aka "Rambo"

Defenders:
Razafindrandriatsimaniry Ralzahaby aka "Raza"
Sagowany
Ramohammed Rakotondrandria aka "Rako"
Simanakava

Midfield:
Sitrakinianiania Rakotomalala aka "Sitra"
Magnahifoho Ralmerina aka "Magna"
Mosi Al-Nazari
Andriniaina

Strikers:
Zozo
Iboniamasiboniamanoro aka "Bobo"

(Names are mostly Malagasy with some Arabic influence, and none of the English/French influence of OTL. Malagasy names don't exactly work like Western ones, but in this TL the practice of first/last names has caught on amongst some. If someone knows a lot about Malagasy naming practices feel free to call me on my bullshit.)

I'm willing to go through with this. Also if more than enough teams apply then I'll take out teams if their maker already has one in the cup.

Sounds good. Didn't mean to be rude. I just notice there is already some question regarding borders of the North American countries and it seems two people have claimed OTL New Zealand.

We have for the most part resolved the North American disputes. As for New Zealand how about Neusachsen gets north island and New Scotland gets south?

I repeat the fact that I can't make maps and we need one.

Did someone claim New Zealand? I must have missed that. Fair enough; I can do without.

So can you run down the rules of what will be happening as this all progresses?

Yeah New Scotland's there but you still get north island New Scotland get South Island, as for your 2nd question once we have 32 teams we'll divide them into groups and every group will have a "ref" who does the scoring and commentary for the group (PM me if you want to ref) once we get to the knockout stage we'll ref game by game.

Any map makers out there?
