So let's start with

Dawn of Dreams

The memoirs of Korean independence leader and staunch advocate for democratic governance Kim Song-ju.

The book begins with Song-ju’s upbringing in Japanese-occupied Korea, and the death of his father at the hands of Japanese police the year before Kim left for college in Hawaii in 1919. In the islands, he was immersed in the philosophy of national self-determination, which before he’d had a cursory interest in, and became a staunch advocate of a Korean republic. This political awakening is the titular “dawn of a dream.”

Unfortunately, this dream would not be realized until the start of the Second World War in 1937, when Japan declared war on British-allied China. In response, the two powers sent covert aid to Kim’s Organization for Korean Liberty, which began agitation against Japanese rule by 1938 and sabotage operations in 1939. For the next seven years, the OKL would fight in a style similar to the later anti-Nazi Alsatian Resistance in France, before declaring independence in 1944 as Chinese troops drove the IJA off the peninsula and being recognized as a proper Allied government.

At war’s end in December 1946, the Korean Republic was recognized as the sovereign nation of the Korean people, and thanks to the Carver Plan executed by the US (plus a vigorous local reconstruction effort), the new country would soon become a bulwark against Stalinism in East Asia, with Kim Song-ju as its first president from 1944-1954.
