AH Speculation - the next generation of Nazi leaders

The premise is the usual Fatherland scenario (however implausible) where the Nazis rule from the Atlantic to the Urals. All the 'Germanic' countries (Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, at least the Flemish half of Belgium, a good bit of eastern France) have been annexed as reichsgaue. It's 1965, twenty or so years after the end of the war. Hitler and the early leaders of the Reich are getting on in years.

So my question is - who's likely to step into their shoes? Who are the people (born c. 1920 or so) from OTL who might become the second generation of Reich Ministers, Reichskommissars, Gauleiters, HSSPFs, etc?

What about Albert Speer? After all, I was thinking of technocrats eventually replacing the Old Guard Nazi leadership once the time comes.

I can see it, as long as he can politically survive telling Hitler many of his architectural fantasies might not be possible.

Also, thanks for sharing these links with us; indeed, Nazi Germany appears to have been full of surprises!

What about building them somewhere other than Berlin, though? Indeed, chop down a forest using slave labor and then begin building!

I'm not sure it's quite that easy. What's the point of building a monumental arch and boulevard and party hall anywhere other than the capital, for instance?

What about building a new German capital a-la Brasilia, though?

My pleasure.

Good. :)

Indeed, exactly what else do I not know about Nazi Germany? After all, in addition to the Wehrbauer, Lebensraum, Holocaust, and interesting trains (on, and WWII, of course!), what else do I need to know about Nazi Germany?

Certainly possible, but that requires an immense amount of work in and of itself.

I don't know - what do you know so far? :D I can recommend some good general histories of WW2, and I have a biographical dictionary of the Third Reich somewhere on my shelves, but most of my books are about German war aims and German occupations of various countries. Wikipedia article Sources and Further Reading are often a good place to start.

Well, the Nazis unfortunately had no problem using slave labor for this. :(

I know a lot of things so far; however, please recommend whatever (else) you can to me! :)

Certainly. Gerhard Weinberg's A World at Arms is absolutely fantastic. At 1200 pages, it makes a great bludgeoning instrument, too. Somewhat more recently, Antony Beevor and Norman Davies wrote good general histories of the war. On the war aims side of things, Norman Rich's two volume Hitler's War Aims is a must-read, but it's also almost 45 years old and crying out for a follow-up based on subsequent research.

A large portion of Hitler's medical problems were clearly stress related so if the Reich wins the war early there's a good chance he could make it at least another 15 years.

In the year 1965 Himmler would be 65, Speer would be 60, Goering would be 72, Goebbels would be 68, and Bormann would be 65.

There's no reason (short of sudden death or debilitating illness) why the Nazi leadership wouldn't still be in power. The lower officials are another story but Hitler and his inner circle would still be alive (Hitler may well retire and let Goering take control as he intended).

Let's focus on the second tier, then. Gauleiters, Reichkommissars, etc.

Assuming so, yes...
I don't know the exact individuals but I'm certain that the next generation of Nazi officials would be just as fanatical, if not more so as the original leadership. They would be the products of never ending indoctrination under the all encompassing Nazi state. There would be very few "moderates" in power in a Reich that stretches from the Urals to France thanks to decades of intense and pervasive brainwashing.

All they would know from the time they enter the education system as children to college as young adults would be anti semitism, anti slavism, social Darwinism, and other core Nazi doctrines. The men (even those who don't enter the military) would go through the Hitler Youth and the females would go through the BDM (League of German Girls).
