AH Question- British Monarchy in a United Party South Africa?

I'll get right to the point then- in a scenario where the United Party wins the 1948 South African elections, what happens to the status of the British monarchy? I've read that the UP was pretty pro-British, but at the same time, republicanism in South Africa was pretty strong...

...so, people of AH.com, what would the UP do?

My personal take is that with a United Party victory, South Africa probably retains more British ties; maybe even keeping the monarch as head of state? Since in a UP victory scenario there's going to be increased European immigration and (most likely) the creation of a coloured middle class (Cape Coloureds, Indians, and middle-class Africans and the like) and education along a "European model" among other things it's possible that the South Africans might retain the monarch as head of state, though of course any post-white-minority-rule regime will most likely remove the monarch as head of state.

But I'm not that knowledgeable on South African history...just someone who'd like to entertain the scenario.
